5 Secret Tips About Braces

Giving You The Inside Scoop About Orthodontic Braces

Taking care of your braces is the best way to ensure your orthodontic treatment goes as quickly as possible. With that said, there are several things that patients might not be aware of when it comes to aspects of orthodontics that do not directly impact the length of treatment. It is for this reason that your friends here in Mississauga & Thornhill, ON, want to let you in on a couple of trade secrets which can help you too during orthodontic treatment.

TIP #1:  Eat Cool Foods

When you are first fitted for braces at our office, the arch wires that we use are "thermal active." This means that the heat in your mouth is what actually makes the wires work. When the wire is heated, the wire returns to its original shape faster. The teeth will follow the shape of the wire, which essentially straightens your teeth. So, when you are sore for the first few days, having something cold, like ice cream, slushies, or even just swooshing cold water around in your mouth will actually relieve the pressure of the wires!

TIP #2: Don't Fear If First Wires Fall Out

The first wires are very flexible. If they should pop out of the last bracket when eating, it is ok to leave them out as long as the wire is not poking you. This is only true for the first wire. During the remainder of your treatment, all wires, brackets, and elastics need to be properly attached.

TIP #3: Choose Braces Colors Carefully

When choosing elastic colours, the darker the colour, the less likely it is to change/fade. If you choose clear or white elastics, they often turn yellow depending on the foods you eat and the drinks you drink. For example: Red pasta sauce will change white elastics a little orange. Coffee/tea will stain clear elastics yellow. Therefore, if you care about the color you chose fading, staining, or changing in any way, be sure to choose the colour carefully.

TIP #4: Relieve Soreness For First Few Days With Braces

Day 1 of braces is not that bad, you will feel pressure but, not really sore.  Day 2 and 3 are always the worst. It will be difficult to bite into hard foods, so avoid anything hard on these days. By Day 4, you should feel pretty much back to normal. It will be much more comfortable to eat by Day 4. Everyone is a little different in terms of pain tolerance so symptoms my last longer for some and others may not feel sore at all. When the pain is unbearable, Ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help.

TIP #5: Visit Your Dentist Regularly For Faster Results

The last tip probably isn't much of a secret, but it is definitely worth mentioning. You should still be visiting your regular dentist/dental hygienist for regulars check-ups and cleanings at least once every 6 months throughout your orthodontic treatment. Clean teeth are healthy teeth and they will move much faster if they are free from tartar build-up.
