While braces are still our most popular treatment option, Invisalign is a close second – and while Invisalign comes with a lot of added convenience, it still takes effort. We'll go over how to care for Invisalign aligners in detail at your initial consultation, but we've compiled some of the most important points on this page to serve as a reference.

How Do I Take Care of My Invisalign Aligners?

Invisalign is a discreet, convenient treatment option, but you'll still need to be diligent in taking care of your aligners. Successful treatment requires continued diligent in wearing, cleaning, and caring for your aligners. Here are a few general tips for taking care of Invisalign aligners:

  • Use a nail file to smooth any rough edges on the aligners that may cause you any discomfort.
  • ALWAYS place aligners in the cases provided when they are not in your mouth!
  • Do NOT wrap aligners in a napkin; they may be thrown away by accident.
  • Do NOT place trays in pockets without a case, as this may cause aligners to break.
  • Do NOT leave trays sitting out for pets to chew on.
  • Do NOT set trays on a table at a restaurant.
  • Do NOT throw away any aligners; keep them until the end of treatment.
  • Do NOT chew gum with aligners.
  • In the situation that an aligner is lost, or broken ALWAYS keep an aligner in your mouth. Try to skip ahead or wear a precious aligner, then call us.
  • Keep aligners away from harsh chemicals, hot vehicles, or boiling water (They are plastic!)
  • Always remove trays by starting from the back.

How Long Do I Need to Wear Invisalign Aligners?

Successfully achieving your new smile will require you to wear your aligners for the full recommended time each day. Here are some guidelines on how long to wear your aligners and when you should remove them:

  • Wear each tray for a full 1 week (a minimum of 22 hours of wear per day), unless otherwise instructed.
  • Remove aligners for eating and brushing teeth.
  • Remove aligners when drinking any liquids containing sugar or use a straw for dark liquids (milk, juice, coffee, etc.). However, it's perfectly OK to leave your aligners in place when drinking water.
  • Use “chewies” every day for 15 minutes. This helps the aligners move the teeth more effectively.

How Do I Clean Invisalign Aligners?

Just like your teeth, you'll need to keep your aligners clean to avoid cavities. This means it's critical that you thoroughly brush your teeth after EVERY MEAL. Placing the aligners back in your mouth without brushing will trap food particles against your teeth, which are then broken down into acids by bacteria in your mouth. These acids eat away at tooth enamel, causing decalcification (permanent white scars) and cavities. Be sure to brush your teeth and the aligners every time you remove them or put them back in, and also periodically soak the aligners in a glass of water with a denture cleaning tablet to perform a deeper clean.

What Should I Expect During Invisalign Treatment?

During treatment, you may notice your teeth feeling slight loose. But don't worry: this is normal and a sign that treatment is working. After treatment, you'll likely need to wear additional aligners to perfect and solidify your new smile. These extra aligners are included in your treatment fee, but keep in mind that any non-compliant wear of aligners may result in the need for a new scan and extra fees.
