Back To School Tips

Helpful Orthodontic Reminders as Teens Go Back to School

Back To School BracesAugust is officially here, and you know what that means, a new school year is just around the corner! Now we know it’s always a bummer when school starts, but a new year also means new school clothes, new school supplies, and for some of you new braces or retainers! In light of that we thought we could give our new patients some tips on taking care of your braces during the school year and remind our patients who are now out of their braces to take care of their retainers. So no matter which school you go to, whether it’s Cummer Valley Middle School in Thornhill, or Glenforest Secondary School in Mississauga, these tips will help you out throughout the year when taking care of your braces or retainer.

Taking Care of Your Braces While in School

By now if you got your braces by the start of summer you should be pretty aware of the foods you should avoid. For those of you who haven't had your braces long or if you're getting braces before the school year starts, here’s some basic tips on what not to eat. Anything crunchy or hard to chew should be avoided as well as sticky foods. This means no gum especially! If you chew gum while wearing braces you’re going to get gum stuck in your brackets, and cause them to pop off. This means you'll have to have them on even longer. Also, if you're going to be playing any sports this year make sure to get a mouth guard no matter what the sport to ensure your lips and gums are protected from your braces. When you buy a mouth guard, make sure it is meant for braces. A mouth guard that is designed to accommodate braces will fit better and better protect you and your braces.

Retainer Care While In School

So, your braces are finally off and you can't wait for the school year to start so you can show off your new perfect smile to the whole school! We are just as excited as you are but here are a few things to keep in mind about your retainer while you are in school. The one thing that we can't stress enough is making sure to bring your case! We suggest getting an extra retainer case to keep in your backpack or book bag so that way if you forget your it at home you will have a back up case to put it somewhere while you eat. Now, if you do forget your retainer case and have to take your retainer out to eat whatever you do don't put it in a napkin on the side of your lunch tray. More often than not it will either be forgotten after lunch is over or you will accidentally throw it away. Also, if possible it is always a good idea to brush your teeth after eating and before putting your retainer back in to avoid any unnecessary plaque build up.
