Dental, Orthodontic, & Overall Health

How Clean Teeth Can Affect Your Overall Health

At Orthodontically Yours, we are passionate about the dental health of our patients. We strive to provide high-quality dental treatments to patients throughout the Mississauga and Thornhill areas, helping each patient achieve a beautiful smile. Healthy teeth are important for more than just a great smile, though – in fact, the health and cleanliness of your teeth can even have an impact on your overall health and wellbeing.

The Effect of Oral Health on Overall Health

While you may not guess it initially, healthy teeth are important for your overall bodily health. For starters, the kind of bacteria found in the gums in patients with periodontal disease is the same type of bacteria found in the veins and arteries of patients with cardiovascular disease – and some studies suggest that bacteria may enter the blood from a gum infection and find its way to the heart. This means that maintaining healthy gums may be critically important for keeping a healthy heart.

Furthermore, a clean mouth can help to protect you from getting sick. If your teeth get dirty and bacteria and plaque build up in the mouth, it creates an environment that's ripe for the development and proliferation of other viruses and bacteria like the common cold or strep. If you keep your teeth clean and healthy through regular oral hygiene, however, you're essentially wiping out the bacterial buildup on a daily basis, give you a "clean slate" at the start of each day and protecting you from infections.
