Your First Visit With Us

Diagnostic Records

Following your initial examination, if we determine that you need treatment and you agree, we will take routine diagnostic records. These important records include photographs and X-rays which are necessary for carefully planning your orthodontic treatment.

Adjustment Appointments

Once you have braces placed on your teeth, we will ask you to come into our office every few weeks for adjustment appointments. During these visits we will check the progress of your treatment to ensure it is moving along as planned. These visits also allow your orthodontist to make necessary adjustments to your braces as your teeth are gradually shifting into their new positions. It is very important to come to these scheduled appointments as they keep your treatment plan on track. If you fail to keep these appointments, the time you spend in braces will likely be extended which is something neither you nor your orthodontist wants.

How Long Orthodontic Treatment Takes

Because every patient is unique, the time spent in orthodontic treatment can vary widely from one patient to the next. How long you are in treatment will depend upon several factors including your age and the severity of the problem(s) being addressed. Orthodontic treatment can last for as little as 6 months up to 2 years or longer.

Appointments with Your General Dentist

After we have provided you with an initial examination, we will send a written report to your general dentist to provide him/her with details regarding your orthodontic needs and potential treatment options.

Before we place braces on your teeth, we recommend seeing your general dentist for an examination and professional cleaning. This is because it is necessary that your teeth and gums are healthy before undergoing orthodontic treatment. If you need some type of dental work such as fillings or crowns, this work must be done before we put braces on your teeth. Once your braces are placed on your teeth, you should see your dentist every six months for routine exams and cleanings to ensure your teeth stay healthy.

Retention Phase of Treatment

Once your orthodontic treatment is complete and your braces come off, you will enter what is called the retention phase of treatment. This is when you will need to wear a set of retainers made just for you that are designed to hold your teeth in their new positions. Our Mississauga & Thornhill orthodontics practice uses both bonded lingual retainers that are cemented to the backside of the your upper and lower teeth along with removable, clear plastic retainers for your upper teeth. While wearing retainers, it is necessary for you to come into our office regularly for so we can evaluate your bite. These appointments are free of charge.
